Traditional vintage quilt pattern names.

Aug 1 2016 very few quilters labeled their quilts with the pattern name. If i say that this list of quilt block names is a comprehensive one it will be an outright lie. The quilt names used in this article are names that are known or are familiar to me and probably not the only names for the patterns as most patterns have many names. This popular and traditional pattern is a beginner pattern that is created out of four rectangles 4 half square triangles and a solid background color.

Most of the blocks of a particular quilt will follow a similar pattern. The churn dash pattern is another historical quilting pattern. There are thousands of ways of designing these blocks and many many curious names given to them. It is part of the well known american quilting tradition.

Chintz quilt c1830 made in an arrangement of hexagons and diamonds. Often these old names are not the names we use today. If you re looking for some americana this is the pattern for you. This makes the nomenclature of quilt blocks very confusing and cumbersome.

I m posting the examples i ve found over the years. However slight variations are made in the old quilt block names or they are renamed altogether to avoid the confusion.
